Snakes of the Bay Area and Northern California

Of the twenty or so species of snakes native to the Bay Area, only one poses any real threat to people. The northern pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus oreganus) is the only dangerously venomous snake in the Bay Area.

The San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California is surprisingly diverse when it comes to snake species. Some are small and uniform in color while others are large and striped, banded or blotched. Take some time exploring this page to learn more about our local snakes.  We have also provided some helpful links where you can find more detailed information on California Snakes.
